CANARIE, DANTE, and SURFnet Test Plan

for Nortel OME6500 release3.0 10GE EPL

Problem/need definition

Nortel are developing a 10GE Ethernet Private Line (EPL) interface for use within the OME 6500 MSPP platform. This interface will enable 10GE client connections to a SONET infrastructure using GFP-F adaptation in a very similar way that GE client connections are possible. In addition, the 10GE EPL interface will support VCAT which will permit the provisioning of multiples of STS-3c capacity to 10GE client ports.

Within CAnet 4, there are two pressing requirements for 5 Gbps LightPaths? (STS-3c-32v), one of which is for TRIUMF in support of the LHC ATLAS experiment.

Project Goals

The purpose of this project is to test the basic operation and performance of the new OME6500 10GE EPL, as well as test its interoperability with the Alcatel 1678 MCC platform.

General Description

The project can be sub-divided into 4 parts:
1. CANARIE will test OME6500 to OME6500 basic operation and throughput performance with Nortel, between Carelton University and Nortel Lab10, over CAnet 4. Note Nortel have already completed in-house testing.
2. CANARIE will repeat the tests in 1. above, replacing the Nortel end-point by TRIUMF in Vancouver. An additional difficulty will be the bridging of the Vancouver local loop between TRIUMF and the local CAnet 4 PoP? which require DWDM optics.
3. DANTE and SURFnet will test 10GE EPL interoperability between the OME6500 MSPP and the 1678 MCC.
4. CANARIE and SURFnet and/or DANTE will provision and test a 5 Gbps LightPath? between TRIUMF and CERN.

Testing
Execute Carleton U to Lab10 Test Plan Carleton U, Nortel mid August 2006 - 27 Oct, 2006: Tests were performed at Carleton U. Bart has brought in a 10GE testset for use as an end device for testing. We ran into a bit of problem with the 10GE EPL card. For some reasons, it locked up in the middle of testing. First we thought it was problems on the testset due to the fact that Bart was quite famillar with the testset. After a few hours testing, we decided to stop and came back some other time so Bart can get familiar with the testset.
- 10 Nov 2006 - We went through the tests we did couple weeks ago trying to reproduce the problems we ran into before. We did identfiy the lockup problem with the 10GE EPL card. The problem is the incrementing packet/frame size that test set generated which produced the repeatable lockup of the EPL card. The problem is reproduceable every time with the same packets pattern. Bart will bring this up with the engineering to look into this. Other than the problem, CCAT and VCAT is working properly. sts3c-16v and sts3c-32v VCAT circuits were tested.
Execute Carleton U to TRIUMF Test Plan Carelton U, TRIUMF 31 August 2006 - 9 Nov 2006: David tried to install the 10GE EPL in Vancouver OME, he noticed that the daugther broad on the card wasn't secured so he has secured the card with one screw. The card power up fine but we would bring the card in service. The system doesn't recognize the card at all. I have sent an email to Bart and Robert and asked them for their advices.
- 17 Nov 2006: Nortel support has logged in the the system, they has confirmed that the card is dead. So we need another card to support the TRIUMF 5G lightpath that should be online very soon. Robert is helpping to locate other proto-card for temporary use.
21 Nov 2006 - Robert got back to us saying that there will be a delay for the three new cards, they has been pulled back due to problems found with card components, they will not be ready until Feb, 2007. We can delay the deployment of the 5G circuit so I decided to take the 10GE EPL card in Ottawa to be used in Vancouver. We'll try to get another proto-card from Robert in Ottawa
Execute Nortel-Alcatel 10GE EPL interoperability Test Plan DANTE, SURFnet 31 August 2006
