Eucalyptus as Middleware for the NEP

This talk discusses the status and evolution of Eucalyptus, which is a technology funded by Canarie's CIIP program, built in 2006 customized for the architecture and design engineering community. We explore these aspects: its architecture as a generic multi-platform middleware, the management of users and resources into sessions, generic methods for integrating new distributed resources as web services, the integration of workflows, and an envisioned peer-to-peer network of resource- and user-management services.

Bruce Spencer is a senior research officer at NRC's Institute for Information Technology, in Fredericton, New Brunswick. His interests in automated reasoning systems and software engineering led to his founding of the Internet Logic group at IIT, which specializes in Semantic Web and Web Services projects. Bruce leads the Semantic Service Computing project at IIT, which seeks to lay the foundations of service-based computing over high bandwidth networks, incorporating service recommendation, composition, monitoring and diagnosis. Projects include Eucalyptus for provisioning electronic resources for large-scale data transmission and high bandwidth videoconferencing systems, applied to the architecture and design engineer community. Other service-based projects focus on the Semantic Web and the inDiscover.net music recommender systems. Bruce is the author the open source web-based reasoning engine jDREW.org. Bruce is a member of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence, the Association of Automated Reasoning, and is a former president of the Canadian Society for the Computational Study of Intelligence. He is a member of the editorial board the international journal Computational Intelligence. He is formerly a tenured Professor of Computer Science at the University of New Brunswick's Faculty of Computer Science. He has a BSc (Dalhousie, 1980), a MMath (Waterloo 1983), and a Ph.D.(Waterloo, 1991). Bruce has organized many workshops and conferences, most recently the International Conference on Electronic Commerce in Fredericton in 2006 and CASCON 2007.
